*i shall plant a seed or two ...

This weekend I shall set in some vegetable and herb plants as well as many seeds into our garden spots!  I am excited as I start the largest garden we have ever personally had, one that will provide us with a large harvest abundant enough for preserving.   We will work our land, and enjoy the fruits of our labor at a later date.

Just today I sat down with the seed box so I could make a plan for the layout of the gardens.  Once I got that all figured out, I set the bowls of water on the counter so I could pour the seeds in to start the germination process.  I learned this from my mother and father years ago. You can soak your seeds a day or so before you plan to put them in the ground and  this will help speed up the sprouting process.

Here is a list of some of the things we are planting in the vegetable gardens as well as the herb garden:
yellow squash
zuchinni squash
field peas
butter beans
pole beans
ornamental gourds

and probably a few others I am forgetting at this late hour!

So, tell me, what are you planting in your garden?

  1. With so many problems with seeds these days, where are you getting yours? Inquiring minds want to know! :) I like your list and look forward to seeing what you do with some of these ~ like the gourds. I LOVE gourds! I bet you do well with watermelons there. Won't it be wonderful to have your own watermelons this summer!!!! I'm excited for you!!!

  2. I wish you were our neighbor!! Halle is starting a little garden this year...I can't help her a bit...totally out of my area of experience and comfort! She is attempting to grow a blueberry bush, tomatoes, cucumbers, basil and cilantro I think!

  3. Julie there is a local feed and seed here and I have bought many seeds from them, some from local stores (heirloom seeds). I am excited about the harvest too (I think!.. it is going to be a lot of work come harvest time!)

Holly, you can help her.. simply encouraging her will be a great help! She may be able to teach you a thing or two about gardening along the way too! (I wish you lived next door too!) I might ask you if J & E were REAL siblings.. JUST KIDDING!!!!

  4. Yay so proud of you! I so wanted to come up with a nice plan and coordinate what grows well together, but at this point we are just trying to get it in the ground LOL! Its all good. I appreciate your forwards. Havent had much research time but hope to look tomorow. BTW your chick picture with your sister from your childhood is precious too!

I enjoy your comments. Thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts!
